A Taste For Knowledge In Naoussa
History, philosophy, and flavor all converge in Naoussa, a small city in northern Greece located in the foothills of the Vermia mountains. Famous as the location of Aristotle’s School, Naoussa is equally known for the quality of its wines and its delicious pies baked in traditional wood ovens.
Our tour begins with a visit to the Aristotle Cultural Center, which houses the ruins of the Mieza tombs and Aristotle’s school. Called from Athens in 343 BC by King Phillip II of Macedon, the philosopher taught classical Greek thought and ideals to Alexander the Great and the children of other noble families. Built among the rocks and caves of a sanctuary dedicated to the nymphs, “Nympheon” provides a stunning landscape to imagine the path of learning the pupils trod with the Great Teacher. Having satisfied our quest for knowledge, we leave for a nearby winery to taste some of Naoussa’s famous dry red wines. Following this, we’ll move to a traditional taverna to learn the art of handcrafted pies, and enjoy a tasting menu of homemade flavors specially prepared for our group.
