Rare plants of Olympus
While Mount Olympus is most commonly known as the ‘Seat of the Gods,’ the valleys and high slopes of Mount Olympus are home to som e of the world’s rarest plant species. Our trip starts in Litochoro with a visit to the Monastery of Saint Dionyius, and then continues towards up the mountain to the trailhead at Prionia (1100 m.) where we get a short course in mountain lore and trekking safety. Along our route, our guide Themis will help us to identify the native species of flowers and plants that grow abundantly throughout the blackpine and beech forest. This is an 11 km section of the European E4 path, that winds across the mountain, crossing the gorge of Enipea (cited by Homer). We make a brief stop at the stunning double waterfall, and then continue onwards for the Cross shelter to wonder at the breathtaking views of the Thermaikos gulf... Saying goodbye to the imposing mountain we take the way back to Thessaloniki.
