Jewish Thessaloniki – “La Madre De Israel”
Thessaloniki has a long and rich Jewish tradition, dating back to the 15th century. Following their expulsion from Spain, Sephardic Jews came to Thessaloniki by invitation from the Ottoman Sultan. Over the next four centuries, the Jewish population of Thessaloniki grew to be the largest in Europe, giving rise to the nickname “la Madre de Israel” (the mother of Israel). The population was decimated by the forced deportations of the Holocaust, and never recovered. The institutions, monuments, and historical locations that pay testament to their presence, however, remain for us to see and experience.
We will visit the Jewish Museum, the Monastirioton synagogue, and the Holocaust monument, along with the “Casa Bianca” and Modiano marketplace, and our guide will explain the intricate relationships between the city and its Jewish inhabitants, whose cultural and economic activities have played such a pivotal role in centuries of the city’s liveliness and prosperity.
